Damen 2 vs. Kanti Schaffhausen  3:0
If height and age – or should I say experience – is anything to go by, then this game was uneven from the start. On average we were a head taller and a good few years older.
We were missing Coach Dänu, who was busy playing for his other team - Herren 2. But one of Dänu’s teammates and long-time Volero-Mitglied, Christoph Schreyer, agreed to take on the challenge of coaching us. As always, Dänu left little to change and provided a detailed game-plan for Christoph to follow.

After motivational words from Christoph (or from Dänu through Christoph), and a team “ajde”, we warmed up to energetic tunes blaring from the speakers.

At short notice, Alessia had been called to play for the Damen 1 in place of Nadine Jenny who was ill. Andrea stepped in to fill the Libera position, where she played a solid match.

We opened strong, with Manu blocking every ball that came near her. This was complemented by Ursina’s efficient Serviceserie. She put the opponents under pressure with 7 serves that barely cleared the net before plummeting downwards. And when Schaffhausen did manage to spike the ball, Linda was there to pass it straight back to Betty. It was going to be a walk in the park…

… or not. The opponents switched gears in the second set, determined not to give up without a fight. Their hits were stronger and more accurate but they continued to struggle with reception as well as double-touch sets. And our towering block continued to make it difficult for them to “punkte”. Over the course of the match, this included 4 beautiful blocks by Betty and too many to count by Manu!

Despite a sharp pain in her side, Linda continued to elevate her game in the second set, killing the ball on numerous occasions. Although it wasn’t as clear as the first one, this set was also never really in doubt.

In the third set, our concentration took a short siesta and we were quickly behind 3:0. Zögernd we started to wake up but struggled to regain or maintain a lead. After a number of service errors by others, Ursina served two aces (including one Netzroller). These aces followed by three powerful outside hits from Linda and we had firmly taken back control of the game. Back in the comfort zone and after a few last-minute substitutions, the game ended after only 54 minutes with a resounding 3:0!

The game was accompanied by a chorus of Voléro chants that echoed throughout the gym. Our soprano voices were complemented by tenors from the Herren NLB, who were playing at the other side of Im Birch’s big gym.

And to top off an enjoyable evening, the match was followed by a team dinner of delicious pizza and good company at Santa Lucia.

Oli tosi kiva!
